Already confident with the basics of coaching and ready to take it further? This practical, half-day live online workshop helps you refine your coaching technique, handle complex situations, and have the kinds of conversations that build capability, trust and performance at a deeper level.

Next course: 5 March 2026. Contact us if you’d like to bring the course in-house before then.

What this course is

Our advanced coaching skills workshop builds on the techniques learned in the course ‘empowering your staff using coaching skills’. We move on from the day to day actions, interactions and conversations that build a coaching culture, towards more formal coaching situations.

You’ll explore proven coaching models like GROW, OSCAR and PRACTICE, and learn how to adapt your approach to different people and situations — including the tricky ones.

What you’ll gain from this advanced coaching skills training

By the end of the session, you’ll be able to:

  • Recap and apply push vs. pull coaching and asking vs. telling
Refresh your understanding of the coaching mindset and know when to step in and when to step back.
  • Apply strategic questioning and active listening for successful coaching
Strengthen your ability to ask powerful, open questions and listen beneath the surface to what’s really being said.
  • Prepare for formal coaching using planning tools
Use tools like the Willing&Able Matrix to plan and structure your approach before stepping into a coaching conversation.
  • Select the right coaching techniques or models for the situation
Identify which model (GROW, OSCAR, PRACTICE, or others) best suits your team member’s needs and the type of conversation you’re having.
  • Have productive career conversations
Guide your people in exploring their strengths, aspirations and next steps — while staying aligned with business goals.
  • Coach through goal setting
Support your team members to set meaningful, achievable goals that drive ownership and accountability.
  • Unpack “attitude problems” with courage and clarity
Learn how to describe behaviours without judging the person, explore what’s behind them, and guide the conversation constructively.
  • Navigate tricky reactions in coaching situations
Respond professionally and calmly to common emotional or defensive reactions like tears, silence, anger or blame.
  • Evaluate and refine your own coaching
Reflect on your coaching sessions and use feedback to continuously improve your skill and confidence.

Who is this training for?

This course is ideal for:

  • Leaders, managers and HR professionals who already have foundational coaching skills.
  • Participants who have completed Empowering Your Staff Using Coaching Skills or have equivalent experience.
  • Anyone who wants to handle more complex coaching situations or build a strong coaching culture in their organisation.

Why choose our training?

We believe that most people want to learn and grow in their roles. One of the most important determinants of how far people do grow in their role, is the level of support provided by their own manager. We’ve seen firsthand how building advanced coaching skills in managers can create an environment where everything thrives and high performing teams are built.

Our workshops are always highly practical. We walk through processes step by step, discovering tools, techniques, conversation starters, and process models that make it easier to create an environment of independence, and growth.

  • Lift performance and accountability – coach people to take ownership of their goals and follow through on actions.
  • Handle difficult or emotional situations – navigate tough reactions with empathy and structure.
  • Develop future leaders – equip your team with problem-solving and self-reflection skills.
  • Use the right coaching approach for the moment – match your style and technique to each person’s skill and motivation.
  • Create a consistent coaching culture – move from “occasional coaching” to coaching as an everyday leadership habit.
  • Strengthen your own leadership identity – refine your questioning, feedback and presence as a coach.

Frequently asked questions

Is this course suitable for new managers?

No, there are other foundational skills that new managers should learn first. We recommend starting with Empowering Your Staff Using Coaching Skills first, as this advanced coaching skills course assumes familiarity with basic coaching concepts. Even better, if you’re new to management we suggest attending our 8-week team leader development program.

Do I need to know coaching models already?

A general understanding of coaching conversations is helpful, but more important is to be able to show and role model curiosity with well-honed active listening and strategic questioning skills. We’ll build on that by applying models such as GROW, OSCAR and PRACTICE.

I’m doing the team leader development program, should I enroll on this course?

This training is not part team leader development program, and we recommend that this advanced coaching skills workshop is done three to six months after completing the team leader development program.

How long is the session?

It’s a half-day (4-5 hours including breaks) live online workshop with plenty of time for discussion and practice.

Do I need to prepare anything beforehand?

To get the most out of this training, we recommend you bring a few real coaching scenarios or recent challenges. We’ll use them to apply the models and techniques during the session, which enriches your learning significantly. You’ll then be ready to apply your new advanced coaching skills as soon as you get back to work.

Will I get course materials?

Yes. You’ll receive model summaries, reflection guides and templates to plan and evaluate your own coaching.

Can you run this in-house for our organisation?

Definitely. We can tailor the content and case studies to your leadership framework or culture.

Is the session recorded?

Typically the sessions are not recorded to protect learner privacy. If you need a recorded option for an in-house delivery, talk to us about arrangements.

What technology do I need?

Just a stable internet connection, microphone and webcam. We use a standard online meeting platform for live participation.

Will I get a certificate or CPD credits?

Yes — participants receive a completion certificate and a record of learning hours on request for CPD purposes. Note that this advanced coaching skills workshop may not qualify for CPD’s for life coaching and transformational coaching accreditations.

What if I need help after the course?

We offer follow-up coaching and bespoke support if you want help implementing the coaching skills that you’ve learned. We want you to know you’re not alone!
